Just installed MSOffice 2003. Running WIN XP-Home version. It takes 3.0
minutes for the main office programs (Word, Excel, etc,) to load, then
another 3.0 minutes to load each .doc or .xls file. During the file loading
process a "RUNNING VIRUS SCAN" msg appears at the bottom of the screen.
I want to know how to turn off the automatic virus scan feature.

Office does not have a built-in virus scanner. What you're seeing is a
function of whatever antivirus program you have on your computer.

Thank you for your response. Over the last week I have disabled both MS
Anti-Spyware Beta 1 and my AVG Virus Scan ver 7.0.300 programs singularily
and together and the 3 min. delay continues. Numerous reboots, etc. WORD or
Excel sure act like it has an internal scan program. One person using Norton
had to disable "Office Plug-Ins" in Norton to get rid of the delay. Any
other ideas ?? ..Fred

This problem was driving me nuts recently - same symptoms, with Word
2002 running Win 98SE and AVG7 Free. Searched the web and Usenet, and
got so confused in the end that I can't recall where the answer was,
but basically you need to find a file "normal.dot" and rename it to
"normal.old". If you run Windows Explorer - Tools - Find - Files or
Folders, and search for "*normal.dot" you may find several hits - one
should be something like: "Windows\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\normal.dot". Rename it, and Word will create
a new, uncorrupted "normal.dot", and Word will run like a dream; at
least, it did for me - hope it does for you!

If you haven't cleaned your system of spyware, download, install, update and
scan with Ad-aware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoftusa.com

All Virus Scanning can be stopped: If your using Norton
Follow the below if you want to open documents much faster
Open Norton
Click on: Norton Internet Security
Click on: Options
Click on: Norton AntiVirus Options
Click on: Miscellanous
Click on: (Disable): Enable Office Plug-in

Hope this helps you out....

I had the same problem, but disabling the office plug-in in Norton did not
solve it.

I keep receiving a message which is a nuisance when I open Outlook

It says "The Add In "Exchange Scan" (C:Program Files\Network
Associates\Virus Scan\scanemall.dll) can not be loaded and has been disabled
by Outlook. Please contact the Add-in manufacturer for an update. If no
update is available, please uninstall the Add-in.
