How do I delete a task without deleting the (associated) email?

I am not even sure how they got "associated" to begin with...

But, I want to keep the email for reference and just delete the task. When
I try to delete the task, I get a message saying "Deleting this item will
also delete the email message. Do you want to continue?"

Could you try again from the beginning? Start by telling your version of
Outlook, what you are looking at and what exactly you are doing (steps to
reproduce).

My guess is that you have marked a message for follow up. Simply mark it as
complete or remove the flag altogether.

Thanks for responding. Somehow I have managed to get the item off my Task
List without deleting the email. Don't ask me how, because I'm not sure how
I did it... Sure wish I could remember in case I need to do this again. But
thanks for your willingness to help!! The more I use Outlook, the more I
miss Outlook Express...

You might indeed want to ask yourself if you need Outlook ;-)
Anyway, we're here to help you and we're not planning to leave any time
soon.
