The detail keeps trying to send the message but never finishes. I tried to
delete the message but it said it is in the middle of transmitting it, so I
can't delete it

File->Work Offline. Completely close and restart Outlook. Delete the message. File->Uncheck Work Offline.

File - Work Offline.
Wait five minutes.
Try to delete message from outbox.
If it fails, file - exit.
Wait five minutes.
Restart outlook and remain offline.
Try to delete message from outbox.

If it fails, what version of Outlook are you running?

Thanks for the reply. I disconnected my virus system and then I was able to
delete the outbox message. Thanks again

As an FYI, don't re-connect the antivirus program - its not necessary to
scan outbound mail - most mail sent by many trojan mailers will not be
detected by it. It creates more problems than it solves when you do.
