How do I delete Explorer's Index.dat file?

Hi,
I use Norton SystemWorks and part of that program is
Clean Sweep. I can't seem to delete the contents of my
history folder. I went to Symantec and read the help
there and was referred to Microsoft help saying that the
Explorer's Index.dat may be corrupted and should be
deleted. They told me to get help from Microsoft on how
to delete the file in XP (Home). Is there anyone here
who can help me to delete that file - OR - did I
misunderstand that it can and should be deleted? Sorry -
I am a novice when it comes to messing around in the
windows folder.
Thanks for any help offered....
Deb

If you're a novice then you shouldn't be "messing around in the Windows
folder."

The correct way to delete Internet Explorer's history:

Open IE, go to Tools > Internet Options > General tab > Clear History button
> OK.

Hi Again,
I did that also - I know how to clear my history but the
Norton program "Clean Sweep" says there is stil history
left. The history isn't being deleted. I read the help
pages at Symantec and they said that I probably have a
corrupt index.dat file and it should be removed. But
since XP can't be started in safe mode that they refer
clients to Microsoft for help in deleting, fixing,
removing or whatever I need to do, the corrupt index.dat
file. I can follow directions and have done other things
like this before but I don't know how to properly delete
the file.
Thanks if you can help or not....

Norton Clean Sweep should be swept clean off of every computer that it
has infested/////been installed on.
