I am making a website for the first time. I am going to have a directory of
over 1000 stores. How do I create a store locator feature with maps driving
directions, links, etc?

Thank you

Mapping on the web is changing quite frequently these days. Lots of
competition between Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft who have superceded sites
like MapQuest which IMO sat on their hands and are becoming a thing of the
past. If you use these new free services that are emerging you have to
accept the fact that they will bundle advertising on every page.

In any event, push-buttons will not make this all happen. You're going to
have to hire a web developer and when you disclose more about your business
processes it may be determined that there are other options available to you
such as Microsoft's MapPoint which has had the best solution for some time
but requires fees to use MapPoint without other advertisers showing up on
your pages.

I'm building a house for the first time.

I am going to have a spa in it.

How do I make it so the sauna preheats at a certain time of day?

ummmmm....
Maybe you should set your sights a little lower on your first effort.

Your information was useful, your sarcastic analogy shows your lack of social
skills. Your advice to set your sights low has obviously benefitted you.

My social skills are fine, thank you. However, I see that your reading
comprehension is weak.

I didn't say set your sights low. I said "lower". I don't think that even
Einstein's first endeavor was to develop the Theory of Relativity. He
probably had to first learn that 1 + 1 = 2.

So, read this, and grow up.

But, whatever. I hope you enjoy the soul sucking feeling of failure you will
surely have as you fail to master the basics before moving on to bigger and
better things.

You could have a database with the store details - so someone uses a form to
do a search, it produces the results. - this can be done in a basic way with
the Database Results wizard.

As to the maps and driving directions, you could have a links to, for
example, the relevant pages on Google Maps (or a similar online street
directory service). Such a service may even offer a subscription service
so you can include the content directly in your pages, rather than having to
link to them externally.

It will take a bit of work, but you could search all the store addresses on
GoogleMaps (or whichever service you use), and then copy paste the URLS to
your database to a field called "Map".

Using the database results wizard and allowing the field to be a hyperlink
you can make it clickable so the user goes to the map provider page to view
the location and directions if applicable.

To do all the work to make the maps etc yourself would take much time and
effort. The above is just one way to accomplish this task.
