How do I change new email options?

Clicking and confused

In Outlook 2003, when I click on a new message it shows up in my reading pane
on the left, and as soon as I click on another message it changes the
previous message to "read". This means that I am no longer able to quickly
browse through emails then return to certain ones.

How can I change this so that, in order for a message to be considered
"read", I have to double-click on it?

Thanks!

Tools > Options > Other > Preview Pane

Uncheck the box: Mark item as read when selection changes.
