How do I change the design template on one slide only

I am creating a presentation with a different background for every slide. I
don't know what happened, but every slide added after one particular slide
seem to be coupled together. If I change the template of one slide, all the
rest of the slides in the group change also. How do I make these slides
independent of one another?

David,
Seems to me you are using multiple masters. Go to the Slide design task
pane, right at the top in the 'used in this presentation section' there will
be several thumbnails, hover over them and you will see what master you used
and to which slides it was applied.
If you want all slides to use the same master, click on the thumbnail of
your choice, or select all slides and apply the master of your choice, or
click on the listarrow next to the thumbnail of the master and choose apply
to all.
If you want only one slide to have a different template, select that slide
and in the task pane click on the listarrow next to the template and choose
apply to selected slides. If you do that you will see an extra thumbnail
appearing at the top of the task pane in the 'used in this presentation
section'.
Now I wonder if I am still making sense here, it has been a long day. So if
I misunderstood your question someone else will jump in and set me straight.
