I installed WordPerfect Office X4 on my computer and it made its applications
the default for opening attachments, e.g., .doc attachments open in
WordPerfect rather then Word. How do I change the default application for
opening an attachment?

Just a thought. Change your file associations back.
Right click Start, Explore then click Tools, Folder options, File types
scroll down to DOC and DOCX and change the opens with to Word.
If this doesn't work then I need more info, like the version you are running

Worked like a charm. Thank you very much. I suspected that I needed to do
something with the general file associations but I didn't know how to access
them.
