rather than going through my sent box and manually moving emails to relevant
sub folders i want to set up rule to auto move sent items with certain words
in the subject line (or body) to its own sub folder. this will require
multiple rules to move multiple emails to multiple subfolders.

i have sussed out how to make copy of sent item to the relevant subfolder
but it still leaves the original email in the sent box, which i want to
delete.
help appreciated.

So you're saying there is no "move" and only "move a copy" clause? I
remember defining rules to MOVE items (from Inbox) to another folder
(Junk) and no copy was left behind (in Inbox).

Rules for incoming messages have options for either moving OR copying
messages to other folders. Strangely, rules for outbound messages allow only
copying (at least in my Outlook '07).

You can make the copy a move by disabling the option to save sent items. If
you want to both move and save sent items, it requires two rules. The moved
items will be marked unread, however, and that can't be addressed.
