DNS forwarder config

I have an internal DNS server for our internal lan and another dns that sits
on our proxy/ firewall server.
The external facing dns is set to fwd to our ISP while the internal DNS is
set to fwd to the ISP and then the external facing DNS. For this to be best
practice, should this be the other way round so that requests are fwded to
the external facing one first and then from there to the ISP or is it fine as
it is?
