Is there a command that can be executed in XP that will "force" a DNS
entry? We have a computer that cannot find \\server, which is static at
192.168.1.10. How can I tell the computer that "server" is the IP
address? hosts? lmhosts? net use <something>?

Thanks!

First, do you have a "working" DNS server on your network?

C:\Windows\Drivers\Etc\hosts

You can edit that hosts file and add in your necessary information.

I am having a similar problem in two networks. One has a working DNS
server. The other is peer to peer. The problem with the P2P is with the
router reassigning IP addresses improperly. (Apparently it is a known
problem with the ZyXEL router.)
