Issue here is as follows: I've been running a performance/security check-up
tool on my PC (XP Home) and it suggests optimizing my DNS cache settings.
Particularly, it suggests changing both the existing times for positive
responses (86400 seconds by default) and negative responses (300 seconds).
Accordingly, I created the registry keys MaxCacheTtl and MaxNegativeCacheTtl
in the LocalMachine registry branch, setting both times different than the
defaults. Still, the PC check-up tool indicates the same values of 86400 and
300 (upon restarting of course). Any help is welcome!

Furthermore, if the DNS cache has default times, why wouldn't MaxCacheTtl
and MaxNegativeCacheTtl exist by default?

If a value exists by default, it does not have to be listed. A listing
is used either to modify the default or to place it there for future
reference.

Your reply answered my second question and I thank you. Any comment on the
first one? My PC checkup tool still tells me the positive and negative ttl's
are the defaults, even after creating the appropriate DWORD values and
changing the times (and restarting of course). Is there an extra step I've
left out?
