If I upgrade a machine acting as a backup DNS server
(win2000) to a domain controller with Active Directory
integrated, then use Active Directory integrated DNS, it
won't automatically upgrade that server to the primary DNS
will it? I don't think it will, at least from what I've
read it won't, but I have concerns.

If the zone is a secondary for the AD domain zone, and its primary is AD
integrated it will change the zone to AD integrated during DCPROMO.

Thanks for tip. I didn't know that. Here's the monkey
the machine: Our primary DNS is a Unix box. I am only
running BIND 4.x as well :/. I am thinking (ie.hoping) if
I make the backup DNS a domain controller, then I can
configure active directory to use those DNS tables, as I
am not certain I will be able to upgrade the BIND version
to 8.x anytime soon. Is it even possible then to make in
AD enabled if it's the backup DNS?

Again, thanks for the help

Actually, BIND 4.97 is the absolute minimum, but you'll need to manually
create the SRV records if you were to soley use that for DNS. Suggested -
recmmended to use mimimally BIND 8.2.3, since it supports dynamic updates
and incremental zone transfers.

You can use W2k DNS for AD, which works with no problems (and usually the
vote by many BIND admins because of the seamless intergration with WIndows
APIs, including the DHCP APIs for when DHCP updates DNS for your clients),
and possibly use your 4.x (depending if it's at least 4.97) as a secondary.
