Hi,

Could someone please tell me what DMA 66 has to do with the price of fish.

I see various tweak programs which can enable it, but they never give an
explanation as to the benefites of it.

Older hard drives used an interface dubbed ATA33 or UDMA33, basically
this means that there can be a maximum throughput of 33 megebytes a
second, this is rarelyu achieved for sustainable periods of time.
As technology advanced UDMA33 was not fast enough so they invented 66
and no prizes for guessing that doubles the speed, assuming both your
hard drive and ide channels supported the new speed, very shortly after
66 UDMA100 came out.
This stayed around for quite long time and inded till the present day.
Maxtor then invented the unnofficial UDMA133 which several hard drive
manufacturers have adopted with success.
Now with the advent of SerialATA (starting at 150megs a sec) transfer
speeds are set to increase..

When windows 2000 came out i cant remember which it was but either:
It didnt support UDMA66
or more likely there were some compatability issues so it was disabled.

you will not get much improvement by going from Ata33 further if you
can enable DMA transfer & have a newer disk with high data density on
its platters & high RPM of them; that Ata66 & further is mostly
marketing trick .... the other stuf I mentioned means most & will
increase HD performance much more in real life ...
