DMA problems

Hey, my DVD Burner wasn't working, so I went to a Microsoft support page
to figure out how to fix my DMA (I was able to diagnose that the DMA was
set wrong). One of the steps was to 'toggle' the DMA by turning all of
the settings to PIO Only (or something like that), so I did that,
rebooted, and now XP will get to the startup screen and just sit there
for several minutes, and it will reboot again. I've already tried
changing the settings back in safemode, but for some reason the
settings don't exist in safemode and I can't set them back. Is there
anyway to set the DMA back to the BIOS default through CMOS or the
command line? Any help is appreciated, so thanks!
