I bought 2 identical sets of hardware. Installed windows 2000 pro on
one, no problems. On the second one, after drive is formatted and
files are copied and you boot into windows, the first step after you
enter the system date and time on installing of IIS and then the DTC,
the setup stops, restarts the machine and starts the setup all over
again. I have seen several posts in this group over the years without
any answers. Does anyone have a clue what this is all about?

My Hardware [ if it helps ]
MB - Biostar P4M266A
Chip - Celeron 2.26 Ghz Socket 478
80 GB Maxtor hard drive
512MB DDR2100 RAM

thanks

I don't have any experience with DTC, but I have experienced the same
when installing NT4, W2k and XP. Sometimes it turned out to be a
corrupted MBR, sometimes a problem with the hardware. Once I had a
defective DVD ROM drive that caused similar problems. Replaced the DVD
and the problem went away.

I actually also have a DVD ROM. I replaced it with a brand new plain
old 52x CDROM. I also swapped out the RAM with some brand new stuff.
Even changed IDE cables. All in vain though. The same problem
persists everytime.

Maybe it's something with the mother board itself? I'm at a total loss
at this point.

Thanks

Replying to myself. In this case, the CD itself seems to be the
culprit. I had been using a custom made Windows 2000 Professional with
SP4 slipstreamed in. The best I can figure is that theres a bug with
SP4 with this particular set of hardware somewhere. I used a normal
SP3 CD to install and it all worked out fine. And SP4 later installed
correctly on its own. Whatever. It all works now.

It is a Biostar U8668-D socket 478 motherboard, for future reference.
