All of the sudden I am seeing a paragraph symbol for each hard return on the page. This is appearing now in every page I open and I cannot find a way to disable it. Did not have this problem until today and for no apparent reason they have appeared.

Click the little Paragraph symbol in the Toolbar.

I'm guessing that you have turned on the "Show all" function. On your
toolbar, look for the paragraph symbol (looks like a backwards P) and click
it to turn this off.

If you don't see that button, you can use Ctrl+* (asterisk) to turn it on
and off.
