Whenever I open a folder from the XP GUI it shows both the items in the
folder on the right hand pane and the directory structure for that
folder on the left hand pane. How can I change XP globally to show only
the items in the folder and not the directory structure ?

Right click on a folder. What item is highlighted in the menu? Is it Explore or
Open? If it's Explore, go to Control Panel -> Folder Options and click on the
File Types tab. Click on Folders to highlight it. Hit the Advanced button. In
the box that appears, click on Open to highlight it and hit the Select Default
button. See what happens now when you open a folder.

Note: If you're curious, this setting is stored in the following registry key.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

Note: If you only want to see the contents of a folder you can disable the
Common tasks bar in Folder Options -> General tab -> Use Windows classic
folders.

Good luck

That is only temporary. It reverts to Folders checked next time.

Worked great. Thanks ! It seems when Explore is used, instead of Open,
one always gets the directory structure also.
