Displaying Custom properties for items

Hi,
Is it possible to have a custom property for all the items in Outlook which can be set by the application (or Add-in) which creates it and also changes the display accordingly. Say, if the property value is 1; then the item will appear Blue and so on, similar to Category property. But for the user, the property is read-only, i.e., user should not be able to edit the value stored in the property for a particular item.
