Anytime I try to view contents of MY COMPUTER (from
Explore) it takes a inordinate amount of time - sometimes
several minutes. The same problem occurs whenever a
program tries to display or access anything on any of the
drives. Oddly, I can get immediate access to MY DOCUMENTS
from Explore or any application.

How long has it been since you defragged your HD? Try it.
