Display stretched

Computer has run fine at 1024 x 768 in past, but now
text/icons appear stretched horizontally in the middle of
the screen and compressed on the left/right sides. No
problem at 800 x 600, but would like to use higher res as
in past.
Nvidia GeForce 4 Mx Integrated GPU on HP2600 running XP
Home.

Tried:
Ran display/video tests - no problems found.
Uninstalled/reinstalled display adapater/drivers
Went to last known good config, but same problem.
Not aware of any new software/programs installed.

Any ideas/suggestions?
