My PC is a Dimension 3000 that I got about a yerar ago, running XP-Pro.
Generally problem free, last night the machine refused to boot
properly. Instead, the monitor appeared to have lost vertical and
horizontal hold completely - it was like watching a 1970's TV. Though
it seemed like a simple monitor problem, the problem itself didn't
begin until that blue-screen that comes on right when XP starts up -
the monitor was otherwise normal for the system start. After numerous
restarts, the problem was always the same - regular boot-up, then XP
starts with display problems. Starting in safe mode, the display works
just fine. Re-starting in regular mode goes back to the display's
hold-problems. The display problem - though rooted in XP, regular mode
- seems confined to the display. That is, the system seems to
otherwise work fine (I was able to shutdown the computer while in
normal mode using the start button with U & U). While in safe mode, I
deleted a bunch o unused files, and ran defrag; I also ran Viruscan -
no problems found by either, but no solution when I attempted a normal
restart.
My machine is has about 512mb of ram, and writeable DVD & CD drives.
I haven't installed any new software in the last week.
Does anybody know what might be causing this problem? Is any other
info needed?
Suggestions appreciated.
