I have this CD which win2k displays the file name in 8.3 format.
However, if I insert the CD onto a Mac, I can see the long file
names. And if I copy from Mac to Windows, the long file name
retains. But I cannot see the long file name directly from the
CD. Is there a way to see the long file names directly on CD?

Zaheer,

some CD writing tools used to have the ability to write
two table of contents, one that the MAC could see, and one
that the PC could see. In these cases, the two listing can
be different but point to the same location for the actual
files so you only duplicate the directory listing, not the
files and support both the MAC and the PC. This formatting
was popular before the PC came with NTFS.

When you put the CD in the MAC, you are looking at the
listing with the long filenames, and thus, when you copy
from the MAC you keep the long filenames. If you put that
same CD in a PC, you see the other listing which is 8.3
formated but points to the same file on disc. and thus
when you copy it from there the filename is 8.3.

The most popular format to use is ISO-9660 which has only
one directory listing and that is 8.3, so your CD probably
is not ISO-9660 and has the two listings. It is like the
CD that has music tracks and data, you can't see the music
tracks if you put it in a PC computer and do a directory
listing, but there is a listing of the music tracks there.
