how do you get the little letter icon to display at the
bottom right hand corner of the screen when a new message
arrives? any help is appreciated. thanks, peter.

Tools-> Options-> tab Preferences-> button E-mail Options...-> button
Advanced E-mail Options...-> option Show an envelope in the notification
area

If it's still not there make sure it's not a hidden notification;
