Display of inactive network adapter icons in the Windows XP taskbar

After unchecking the "Show icon in the notification area when
connected" the icon for an NIC thats not connected still shows up. How
is this disabled?

I've had a similar problem and have tried Ashok's solution (selecting 'always
hide' when customising the notification area) but the problem seems to recur
every time I re-start. Any more suggestions?
