I get this error message just after Windows Vista starts:

Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered
Display Driver R300 stopped responding and has successfully recovered

However, my computer hangs and resets over and over again such that I have
to reset my whole pc. Thinking that this is a video card problem, I have
updated my ATI x700 driver but the problem persists. Now, I have to disable
it just to use my pc. Any help would be most appreciated

I have this exact same problem except I am using a Radeon X1950 Crossfire
with the Catalyst 7.1 drivers.

Anyone have any ideas?

and is becoming a big hassal not to be starting my computer normally.

I installed Catalyst 7.2 and this took care of the problem. Still having
problems getting Crossfire enabled but the crashing stopped.

The problem is with the video card manufacturers.. both ATI and nVidia are
struggling to get something that works.. try the latest drivers as suggested
in the other reply..

Microsoft should have done a better job partnering with the vendors. Vista
was hardly a surprise.

I suspect it was a mutual mess up here. You'd have thought the video
guys would have been really up to snuff with drivers as Vista in part
is designed to sell higher performance video cards.

I'd seen reports suggesting the 7.1 driver might be better than the 7.2
driver.

I've not ventured onto the notebook vista field yet -- putting that off
for a while -- since I purchased a notebook last fall with XP2 and have
no inclination to upgrade in place.

Yeah..
it's also happening with my radeon X1650 pro 256MB PCI-E card.
Sometimes windows comes up with an R300 driver error, but usually it cant
recover and I get the blankSOD(audio loops a little, then stops) i cannot get
out of this and have to hard-reset my computer. i have gotten the blueSOD a
couple of times too. I have only tried it with fullscreen 3d applications
(games, and some demoscene on-the-fly 3d rendered videos)
I'm hoping this will be fixed by someone.. until then im getting a
second-hand XP and updateing to SP2 stable so that I KNOW it is a driver
issue (and not my mobo)
