Display blacks out and pops back after logging on or changing user

When I log on to my computer, my monitor shows my desktop (background, icons
etc...), then goes black for a couple seconds, then comes back again. This
also happens when I change users. The new user settings load and the
display shows the background and all icons, then goes black for a couple of
seconds, then comes back again. I'm new to XP. Is this normal or can I do
something to stop it from happening? Thanks.

See if you have any Nvidia items in Startup such as NvCpl and nvwiz. If
so, uncheck the items.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab
and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply
and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you
do you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box
that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Thank you for the response. I did as you said but I don't have any Nvidia
items in Startup. Could there be another cause or possible solution? It
seems also that when I log between users, it takes a very long time. Again,
the screen goes black, the new user settings eventually load and display, the
screen again goes black and then appears normal again. I've only had this
system one week - brand new.

Do some clean boot troubleshooting to see if it's something else loading at
startup.
