What happens if I have decreased the amount of disk space available to SR,
bringing it down to an amount which is less than what SR has already
utilized for the existing set of restore points?

My guess was: SR would simply delete as many of the oldest restore points as
necessary to bring the size of all restore points down to within the new
limits.

But something tells me my guess is wrong!

I would venture to say your guess is probably correct.

After all, it already erases the points as needed to make room for new
restore points.

The truth is that I had already tried it twice with no apparent changes
before I posted the opening post of this thread. I had already reduced the
available space to one-third of it's original size ... but no restore points
had disappeared.

Since then, I have been trying to figure out how to see how much space was
actually being used by SR for the existing restore points. This required
accessing the System Volume Information folder, which took a while to figure
out how to do. Finally, I got access and found that the file

_restore{5634FE95-C77E-422F-9C07-E366B11B321F}

had a "size on disk" of about 2000 MB which was still smaller than the newly
reduced allocation, explaining why no points had yet disappeared.

Bringing the slider down one more notch to a limit of about 1500 MB, I
expected to see some points disappear ... but still no change!

Okay. So, I brought the slider down another notch to about 900 MB, and
suddenly ... BOOM! ... an entire month of (the oldest) points disappeared at
once.

I then checked to see what the "size on disk" of the "_restore{563..." file
had become, and the new size was about 1300 MB form the original 2000 MB
(... but still (curiously) larger than the 900 MB limit ... I suppose the
limits aren't absolutely "strict" (or perhaps the file's size is not really
the "official" amount devoted to SR)) ... so, it appears to be quite
definitive now:

.... then SR will simply delete as many of the oldest restore points as
necessary to bring the size of all restore points down (roughly) to within
the new limits.

[Hey ... come to think of it ... this is a new way to safely delete restore
points ... but then again, it is kind of "hit and miss".]
