Disk Read Error

Hi all,

My saga continues. I'm installing a GA-7N400 Pro2 fixed my CPU recognition
problem but was having problems getting my two WD drives to boot into XP as
master/slave on the RAID channels as normal ATA. Anyway, I set BIOS to RAID
and on the Gigabyte I set the RAID to "normal". It state an array had been
created and I continued to boot into windows. It spent a long time on the
welcome screen but finally moved on to the logon screen. I put in my
password and waited....waited....waited....for a half-hour. Finally I hit
the reset switch as I was getting no response. On reboot I get a disk read
error, hit ctl-alt-del message. That's where I remain. I tried to boot
from the CD to do a repair but after the message about checking out my
hardware, it sits on a blank screen...no blue screen "starting windows"
message. I'm beginning to think my HD is permanently hosed. I checked my
cable connections, etc. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Derek

Hi,
Has XP got the drivers for the Raid system? You should have pressed F6 when
installing XP to install the drivers.

Incidentally, I too had a problem trying to use the Raid controller as an
ATA controller on my GA7-NNXP. It just would not work correctly, regardless
of what sort of device I had on it (I even tried several different BIOSes,
including hacked ones!!)

I Assume you hit F6 during install and loaded the Raid drivers.
Check not only the IDE cables but also the power cables and the jumper
settings on the disks (CS should work, but you can allways try setting them
to master and slave).
If the two WD drives are not the same model try moving them to seperate
channels on Raid controller (you shouldnt need to do this but there are
occasionally differences between drives from the same family).

Nope...didn't hit F6. This was a motherboard upgrade and I was using a
repair install. Not sure why I failed to do that. How do I fix now?
Incidentally, everything was up and running smoothly on the standard IDE
channels when I decided to move them to the RAID channels. Dumb move. They
are different models so, I'll try separating them. They are currently set
to master/slave.

Come to think of it I did install the RAID drivers but not via F6. I had
the system up and running and then installed the drivers from the included
disk. At that point, I decided to move the drives to the RAID channels.

Ok I have a GA 7N400 PRO bios version 12. Re-check your settings in the bios
it's easy to miss something and get it wrong you'll know if the bios is set
correctly and the right drivers are installed as when it boots, it comes up
with something like... looking for ide devices with a cursor spinning around
I currently have two optical drives, a 60 gig and a 80 gig hdrives(seagate)
on the normal ide controllers and a 80 gig WD hdrive as master on the raid
controllers this is set in the bios to normal ata drive. this is detected in
both winxp pro, as well as win2k pro. This had to be setup correctly bios,
as well as the drivers(ite drivers) for ata raid, not sata raid. I'd have to
restart to check my settings in the bios...I'm downloading so it won't be
for a while...let me know if you need more help

Well, it seems I figured out the problem. Somehow, the MBR, boot.ini and
ntldr all got hosed. Obviously, operator error here.....had one of those
blonde moments. Ran Data Lifeguard diagnostics and found no physical
problems with the drives, so my data is safe. Wouldn't you know it though
there was a computer fair in town today. Sauntered on down and grabbed an
80gb Maxtor SATA and some other goodies. HD formatting as I type. I'm a
happy camper again. Thanks for the suggestions all.
