I have recently completed my own new computer build w/ a Maxtor 7200RPM
SATA drive. When I attempt to run Windows 2000 setup CD-ROM, I get this
error message:

Disk I/O Error. Status = 00000101
Failed to ArcRead the boot partition to check for a signature.

It then proceeds into the Win2K setup, loads drivers, ect, then as it
says "Setup is loading Windows 2000" I get the

Disk I/O Error: Status = 00000101

again. It still continues with the installation attempt... "To set up
Windows 2000 now, press ENTER." I press ENTER. Examining disk
configuration, please wait. Setup has determined that your computer's
startup hard disk is new or has been erased, ect. To continue, press C,
data will be lost, ect. I press C. License agreement. I press F8 to
accept. And here's where it gets hairy:

"The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned
space on this computer.

Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select an item in the list.

- To set up Windows 2000 on the selected item, press ENTER.
- To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C.
- To delete the selected partition, press D.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
131070MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi

(Setup cannot access this disk.)"

If I try pressing UP or ENTER, I get a STOP error. If I press down, C,
or D, NOTHING happens.

"*** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0xBFFC089E, 0x00000000, 0x00260004)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

So... any ideas?

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system)
in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify
additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer
supplied Windows 2000 driver for your serial ATA controller in drive "A"

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.
