why can't i format a cd?
I'm using an hp with windows xp home edition 5.1.2600 service pack 2 build
2600
and I ran mmc and opened a console for disk management.
When I click on the d: drive which is my cd, the only tasks available are
change drive letter and paths,eject,properties.

I'm not sure what my next step with mmc is. Anybody?

One probable reason is that the format command does not include the
programming to format a CD-RW. The capability to format such a disc
is typically supplied by the burning application that was installed
for the computer, e.g., Roxio, Nero, CDBurnerXP, etc.

Same reason that you can't format a keyboard. It is not physically possible
to do so.

yes, it is, it just depends on the type of Media ie CDRW and the proper
software
regular cd's do not require formatting

First, you can't format CDR's, you need CD/RW disks. Or, DVD/RW if your
drive supports them.

Disk Management does not have any tools for formatting any type of CD or
DVD.

So, you aren't going to get far, there.

You exit, because it can't help you..

To format a CD/RW or DVD/RW you need packet-writing software, which XP does
not include. Examples of the software are InCD (Nero), DirectCD (Roxio)
or DLA (Sonic).
