My disk keeps crunching away when my system idle
process cpu usage is high. I have a noisy disk,
is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Adding more memory to the system is probably the solution. Sounds like you
are thrashing - I/O bottleneck, high processor usage, and I suspect high
physical memory usage. The system is completely occupied swapping stuff in
and out of physical memory trying to handle the work load.

Using Task Manager and adding the appropriate I/O columns
to the display will tell you which processes are causing the
disk thrashing.
