disk format during XP setup is slow

I try to install XP Pro on an Asus P5B mainboard. I took
the hard drive from another PC, where it worked fine. I
also ran Seagate diagnostics on it, and it passed.
Now the XP setup said there is already a Windows on C:
so I chose to format the disk first to NTFS. It is a SATA
disk of 160 GB.
Unfortunately, the format took 3 hours to reach 4%. Then
it went quite briskly until 15%, where it choked again.
Took another hour to hit 19% then sped up until the 25%
mark, where it is lethargic once again.
During these slow phases, you may hear the heads ticking
back and forth. This suggested to me, that it is having
lots of retries, however the disk is allegedly faultless.
What gives?
