I am currently running Windows XP home on an athlon
machine. Recently the computer will not recognize any
cds or dvds when loaded in the drive unless I first
reboot the computer, then the disks are recognized
without a problem. The disk drives are present under "my
computer" and I have uninstalled the drives and
reinstalled them which did not correct the problem. I
have the same issue with my digital camera (USB) in that I have
to reboot the computer with the camera attached before it
recognizes the storage card in the camera. I am also
having problems with my floppy drive where it always
wants to format disks that are already formatted. All of
these items were running fine some time ago and I have
not added any new hardware to the computer, the only
thing I have done is to install windows updates and other
software.

Please help!

Try booting into Safe Mode, open Device Manger, remove all instances of the
offending hardware items, reboot and see if Windows finds and installs the
correct drivers.

Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;321641

And I would seriously suggest doing a repair installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;315341

IMPORTANT: Use Method 2 on that link, NOT Method 1.
