something clicked on the taskbar after I'd pressed the expansion arrow, and
then the next thing I know, I have a message from the hardware managing thing
or whatever, telling me that my cd/dvd drive is being prepared for "safe
removal". When I go to the device manager off of the control pannel and look
at the properties for the cd/dvd drive, it tells me that it's been prepared
for "safe removal" but hasn't yet been removed. How do I prevent it from
getting removed?

Brianna, is your cd/dvd drive a External USB 2.0 Configuration?

Brianna, read this. Though the Safe Remove Icon is appearing in the Task
Manager see if you can rt click on it and choose
Exit.

Safely Remove Hardware Application
Before you remove a device from a bus ( USB 2.0, Firewire ) that supports
hot plugging ( removing the cd/dvd drive while the WinXP is running ), check
to see if the Safely Remove Hardware icon appears in the notification area.
If it does, it is recommended that you use the Safely Remove Hardware
application to notify the operating system that the device is about to be
unplugged.

To notify the operating system about removing a Plug and Play device

1.. Click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area. The
icon displays a notification bubble with a list of devices currently
attached to the system.
2.. Click the device you want to remove. The device is stopped and can
then be unplugged.
