hard disk.

and when i attempt to run antivirus scan on a flash disk the computer just
switches off on its own.

And what happens when you try to run defrag?

Tin

Do you have more than 15% free disk space?

Select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Defragmenter

If you still can't get Disk Defragmenter to complete. Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on
Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and
post a copy.

Hope this helps.

Try running scandisk on each drive letter, checking both checkboxes, and
rebooting. (A disk could have problems.)

If that doesn't fix these issues, reinstall or upgrade to the latest Windows
XP service pack. (Windows itself could be unstable.)
