We get this message when run normally, and in Safe Mode. We have done the
System File Checker, and have searched using Yahoo without success.

We just removed the trojan that installs as a video codec, regained control
of the machine, rans some updates, deleted temp files and were looking for a
defrag to finish.

Any suggestions are extremely appreciated. It is Windows XP Media Center
SP2, and we have no recovery media. I'm hoping to avoid a recovery if at
all possible.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Hi:

You might try reinstalling Disk Defragmenter as follows:

Reinstalling Defrag using the INF file.

The following file is located in a hidden folder.
To view hidden files follow these steps:
Open Control Panel - Folder Options - View tab, select "Show hidden
files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types",
click OK.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the windows\inf folder.

Find the dfrg.inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Hopefully by reinstalling Defrag this will resolve your problem.

When you say you have no recovery media, do you mean that the system has
only a recovery partition, and no reinstall CDs?

If that's the case, your first priority should be to figure out how to make
the recovery media, or, get another drive and clone the old one to the new
one.

Otherwise, you will find yourself needing to purchase a new XP license.

You can defrag the drive by attaching it to another system, which you might
do just before you clone it.
