Turn off un-needed services. It is often easiest to defrag
in safe mode.

Have you downloaded all critical updates? What op are
you running? I used to have the same problem with win
98se and downloaded IDE hard drive patch for it. Go to
microsoft support and search for it.

Are you certain that you have allowed ample time. Defrag can appear to
hang at that point, especially when used for the first few times. Give it
an hour or so, just to be certain.
