WHEN DEFRAGMENTING MY HARDRIVE, THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO FILES
THAT DO NOT DEFRAGMENT. THE FILES ARE
\WINNT\SHELLICONCACHE AND THE FILE SIZE IS 697 KB. IS THIS
AN ABNORMAL SITUATION, AND IF SO, IS THERE A REMEDY? THANK
YOU FOR ANY ASSISTANCE YOU MIGHT OFFER

Not sure if it is abnormal, but every time I defrag I have
some files that are still fragmented, different files
though. I've run defreag like 3 times in arow on same
drive and there is always some files that state they are
fragmented.

Thus I am not sure if it is normal or it is actually a bug.

Hi Kevin,

According to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article KB227350, the ShellIconCache file is
permanently excluded from being defragmented. For more information see the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB227350 - Files Excluded by the Disk Defragmenter Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=227350

For a step-by-step article that describes how to effectively use the Disk
Defragmenter tool in Windows 2000 see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB318759 - HOW TO: Use the Disk Defragmenter Tool in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=318759

BTW, on Usenet typing in all caps is considered shouting!
