I have changed my Disk Defragmenter utility to a much mor epowerful one and I
am wondering now if I should get rid of the one that comes with windows. It
is probably taking up otherwise usable space on my hard drive and I don't
want that. How much is Disk Defragmenter taking up, and how can I get rid of
it?

defrag.exe only takes up 25k, so there's not much point in deleting it,
even if you don't use it.

I believe the total of all the files takes up less than 1 MB of disk
space. If you are short on disk space, freeing up that 1 MB isn't going
to help much at all. You would also need to be careful as even defrag
tools made by other companies leverage the defrag API's built into
Windows. You wouldn't want to take the risk of removing the built in
Windows defrag tool and break your other defrag tool because the files
you removed contained some of the API's used by the other tools. Most
of the files used by the built in defrag tool are in the
%windir%\system32 folder and are protected by system file protection.
There is not way built into the OS to remove this tool.

For a Defrag tool to receive Microsoft's blessing I believe it must use one
of the APIs (Microsoft MoveFile API) that the built in defrag tool uses as
part of the file defragmentation process. If you accidentally remove this
API or others while trying to gain some extra disk space as previously
mentioned you could break the new defrag tool you installed.

Looking at it another way, at today's hard drive prices, 1MB is less
than 1/10 of a US penny's worth of disk space. It's a *tiny* amount,
as you say.

I thought it might have been taking up sometihng like.... 50MB. But I guess

There is no reason to remove the disk defragmenter that comes with
Windows. No reason at all.
