Phil,
You more than likely have a corrupted compressed file which is causing the
Disk Cleanup utility to hang.
To workaround this issue, delete the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B50F5260-0C21-11D2-AB56-00A0C9082
678}
Deleting this key will eliminate the scanning for compressed files.
