Disk Cleanup function

Generally I try to run the Disk Cleanup feature along with all my other
maintenance (defrag, spyware sweeps, backup) once a week.

This week I went in to run the Disk Cleanup function (which normally takes
no more than a few minutes) and it does not seem to want to complete.

The popup tells me that the utility is on "Compress old files" but it never
gets beyond that. Literally two hours later it is still on "Compress old
files". Since there is no feedback in the popup, no indication of what it is
trying to compress or even if it is actually working, I was hoping someone
could give me an idea as to what I can do to either discover what the holdup
is, or push the program past the bottleneck.

I am running XP Version 2002, SP2, on a Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz, 3GB RAM

The only oddity I noticed is when the initial popup indicating space to be
recovered comes up, the "Compress old files" number was 27,175,71 (That's not
a typo, there was no 8th digit).

Thanks for the info. I have now been able to run the Disk Cleanup without
freezing.

However, I note that the "Compress Old Files" function no longer shows in
the Cleanup operation. Is this temporary, or has it been permanently removed
as a step in the Cleanup operation?

Disk Cleanup still works, but the "Compress Old Files" handler is removed
from Disk Cleanup options, as selecting that option slows up the cleanup
work.
