With XP Pro and a USB 2.0, 80G drive, running Properties
> Tools > Error-checking gives this unhelpful message
near the end of Phase 1: "Windows was unable to complete
the disk check". No other messages are given.
Drive shows ready (green light with brief red during
operation), and appears to be functioning normally (Disk
Pie Charter works, I can browse dirs and open files).
The last time Windows was shut down, the drive hung (red
light, followed by cannot-write error popups from XP).
This is with auto-fix and sector-scan turned off in disk
check.
What type of drive corruption would cause this failure,
and is it repairable?
A possibly-unrelated symptom: for about a week now, some
fraction of the time Windows Explorer will show a blank
window when opening this drive's root dir. Moving up to
My Computer (backspace) and re-opening the drive icon
fixes it. Until the next occurance. Drive shows Ready.
