I am running windows xp home edition on a compaq/presario
when booting up I get disk boot failure,insert system disk and press enter
I don't have disk want to do it manually

Go to BIOS at startup.
Check wheter your harddrive is detected or not.

If the computer CAN detect the harddrive, check your BIOS Boot Priority
option.
Make sure you select the harddrive as the first boot device.
But if after doing that you still get the same error message, there may be
something wrong with your MBR. Try reinstalling Windows.

If the computer CANNOT detect the harddrive, the possibilities may be one or
more the following conditions : failing power supply, failing harddrive data
cable ( ATA or SATA cable ), failing harddrive power cable, dying harddrive.
You can have a test by unplugging the harddrive from your computer then plug
it on another computer and see wheter the harddrive can be detected or not.
If not, then the disk is died...If the disk can be detected, replace the
harddrive data cable ( ATA / SATA ) - you can purchase a new one from nearby
computer hardware store, also try to use another power output jack from your
current power supply.

It's not asking for your XP disk, it's telling you that it can't find
Windows anywhere on your system.

This errors happens when you try to boot from another CD or Disk that is not
the Booting disc. Sometimes we forget one in and this causes the error.
Other times is something more serious like a virus corrupted a System File,
and you can't no longer enter to windows or a Hard Drive failure.
