Disk Activity While Idle

My disk-activity light is constantly flickering when my computer is idle.
So, I checked task manager and found a system process called "System Idle
Process" is the only continually-running process. It's CPU-column shows a
variable value of around 97 while a few other processes momentarily show a
1. I also found system process lsass.exe shows I/O read/write activity and
csrss.exe shows I/O read activity.

I turned off WIFI but that didn't change anything.

Is this normal behavior as I don't think the computer used to show disk
activity when idle?

It maybe due to the XP indexing system. This indexes all the files on your
system so that when you use search they can be found quickly.

You might try turning this feature off.

1/ Go to My Computer
2/ Right click on your hard drive
3/ on the general tab look at the bottom of the window
4/ You should see 'Allow indexing service to index this disk for fast file
searching'
5/ If there is a tick in the box to the left of this option, click on it
with your mouse to remove the tick and disable the feature.

I tried it but it didn't help.
I started in safe mode and disk activity stopped while task manager showed
both lsass.exe and csrss.exe with cpu activity as did taskmgr.
Thanx for the suggestion.
Any suggestions as to how I might find out what is causing this disk
activity? It would seem that System Idle Process is probably doing
something.
