HI,

I ran the anti-virus program I've installed(pc-cillin) on my pc and found a virus. I've tried to clean it, but the pc freezes(even without running the anti-virus program) and forces me to reboot it. This problem haven't permitted me to complete the cleaning process using the anti-virus program. I was wondering if theres a way or a program that I can use to clean the pc using ms-dos prompt?? or maybe any suggestions on other alternatives to get rid of this virus??

Boot to safe mode and run the scan again.

Do an on-line virus scan.

Get a commercial anti-virus program, such as Norton or
McAfee, their CDs are bootable and you can then run the
anti-virus scan.

Download STINGER from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ It
detects and removes about 45 common viruses.

There are several virus cleaning programs that work from a DOS prompt.
Problem is if your hard drive is formatted to the NTFS file system, no
DOS AV program will be able to "see" it. If your HDD is formatted to
FAT-32 go here and download the free copy of F-Prot DOS:

http://www.claymania.com/f-prot.html

Note: You will have to build a boot disk and an executable disk in
order to use F-Prot DOS as it is too large to fit on one floppy with
the boot files included. An alternate method would be to put it all
on a bootable CD. Use Nero or EasyCD to create one.

Also - you might try running your AV program from SAFE mode. Press F8
during POST and select safe mode without networking.

I've tried running the AV program(pc-cillin) in safe mode but didn't open.

What else can I do to be able to run the AV program??

Try downloading and running McAfee's Stinger. It will run from a
floppy. It checks about 45 common viruses. Also try other online scans:

McAfee Stinger, Downloadable Virus Scanner:

Online Virus Scanning:

Bit Defender Online Virus Scan:

Symantec Online Virus and Security Scan:

TrendMicro:

Panda ActiveScan

FYI Frisk's fpcmd.exe can be run in a command window and will, unlike
F-PROTDOS work with NTFS.
Best to create a bootable CD see http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder for
instructions.
