Discussion - word search - wrong message dates

Why would the word search list message dates of messages found that
are different dates from the dates that I see on the message files
with Frontpage?

The message files show several years of dates, but the list of search
finds shows all messages to have the same date.

I have, FP2000, Windows host server, FP2000 extensions. (Used to be on
a Unix server.)

Information would be appreciated, Stan Hilliard

Here is some more data about the date mystery.

FOLLOWUP EXAMPLE: 1 -- I dial-up and connect to the website

DISCUSSION MESSAGES, web is on server:
(1) Search with IE6 browser, listed files: all dates = 7/7/04
(2) Viewed with my FP2000, same files: dates vary 10/30/98 to 6/28/04

(3) Viewed by IPP's FP2000, all file dates =7/7/04
(4) Viewed by IPP's "explorer", all file dates =7/7/04
(the IPP did something to fix the FP searchbot on 7/7/04, as it wasn't
finding words.)

DISCUSSION MESSAGES, web is on my PC:
(The web was published down from server on 3/30/04.)
The pattern is the same as on the server.

(1) Search with IE6 browser, listed files: all dates = 3/30/04
(2) Viewed with my FP2000, same files: dates vary 10/30/98 to 6/28/04
(3) Viewed by Windows Explorer, all file dates =3/30/04

How can I resolve these contradictions.

PS: I think that Frontpage must keep a separate record of each files
creation/modified date. Otherwise the file dates would be changed by
the OS when a web is published -- which they are not.

Explanations would be appreciated,
Stan Hilliard

Stan,

The OS (at least under Windows), keeps 3 dates for each file, Created, Last Modified and Last
Accessed.

FP keeps basically 2 dates for each file, Created and Last Modified based on when you create or
modified the file via FP.

When you publish from one FP enabled server to another with FP, then FP will maintain the created
and last modified dates. However if you copy and paste files between location/server with FP, then
FP will change the date to the current date and time on the location receiving the pasted file.

How do you search for the date stamp with IE?

I used IE to perform the search and view the dates that appear in the
search's list of messages/files that contain the "searched-for" word.

The puzzle is that the dates on that list of search findings are not
the useful dates that show when the discussion messages were posted.

Here is some additional data by example:

I view the discussion page with my IE browser and choose a message in
the contents frame having the date shown (in the TOC) as 29 Dec 2003.
With my mouse cursor over that message, the file name is shown in the
lower status bar of IE as "000002a8.htm"

I click on that item in the TOC and the message appears in the message
frame with the date 29 Dec 2003 in its heading.

I do a word search for a word in the message. The search displays a
list of message titles and their dates and score. The message/file
000002a8 is one of them. Its date is shown as 7/7/2004!!! (instead of
the desired 12/29/03). All of the other messages in the list of "hits"
also have 7/7/2004 shown as their dates too.

I then dial-up and connect FP2000 to my discussion subweb on the
server. With the folders view of FP I select the folder (/_disk1sam/)
and find the file 000002a8.htm. The date shown by FP2000 in the
"Modified Date" column for 000002a8.htm is 12/29/03 -- the true
message date.

My desire is that the search would display the true posting date (or
edited date) of 12/29/03.

More information about 7/7/04:
Yesterday, 7/7/04, I noted that my word search was not finding words
that I knew were there. So I asked my IPP to look into why it was not
working at all. He did and fixed it. When I verified the fix, I
noticed that all of the "hit" messages have the date 7/7/04.

Today, 7/8/04, the search delivers up 7/7/04.

More information about the host server:
On march 30 2004 I changed IPPs and published my web from the previous
host server directly to the current host. Then I published the web
from the new host to my PC for backup.

I suspect that the FP search bot stopped working at that time.
Previous host server = Unix
Current host server = Windows

I hope that there is a way to fix the problem. And please forgive me
for posting such a long message.

Sincerely, Stan Hilliard

I just noticed:

I just looked at the text of the actual message from the example above
(000002a8.htm). The date that FP added at the bottom of the message
is:

Last changed: July 07, 2004

So in summary, the message date that the search bot displays should be
the date that appears in the header of the message (29 Dec 2003) and
not the date that appears in the footer of the message (July 07,2004).

Stan,

The date that you see if for the actual page, not the individual message, as the messages are just
written to a HTML file at the date/time they were posted, they are not stored in any type database,
etc.

The only solution is to move to a database driven discussion application.

Thomas,
If other discussion webs have searches that display the right message
date -- why can't mine?

Go to the following discussion using a URL that was posted on this
forum. Search for the word "test". It works and the messages have
different dates.

http://www.universalwrite.com/disc2_toc.htm

Now go to my discussion and do the same: search for "test".

http://samplingplans.com/forum/forum.htm

I know that the files have the true message dates on them because I
can see them in FP2000 explorer in folders view. My dates should vary
like the ones in the universalwrite discussion.

Sincerely, Stan Hilliard

Stan,

The different that I see (beside the date) is that Universalwrite is not showing a last date modify
in the footer, where as your site is, and that is the date that appear in the search results. Also
Universalwrite is using a site wide search, not limited to the discussion web or guest book.

Try this, remove the Last Modify date component on the live site, then run Tools | Recalculate
Hyperlinks.

I agree, but I do not have any actual pages in the my discussion
subweb with the date 7/7/04 (when looked at by FP2000 explorer),
except for the most recent message file. The page that contains the
frames is dated 3/20/02.

I will make that change and recalculate hyperlinks, but first I am
going to publish the web to my PC for safety.
