Disappearing hard disk space

After booting WinXP Pro on a 20 gig HD that shows, for
example, 6 gig free space, within an hour the available
space reduces by 2 - 4 gigs WITHOUT my creating any
files, adding programs, etc. It can even decrease when
there is NO activity at all. Any help will be most
appreciated. --- John

This is usually a sign of malware.
Do a full virus/trojan and spyware check.

Thanks for the quick input. But... Run Norton 2004 and
PestPatrol at startup. Have done full scans with Norton
and HouseCalls (online MicroTrends) and found nothing.
Any further suggestions are WELCOMED.

Too big a pagefile?
Click on pagefile.sys in explorer to see it's present size.

Too much space allocated to system restore?
Navigate to the SR tab
(my computer (right click)/properties/system restore tab)
Click on the drive to see how much space it's using.
Reduce if necessary. I have mine down to about 500mb,
gives me checkpoints for about a week.

ITSELF, tho' I had always managed it myself at 768 MB
(1.5 times my physical memory of 512.) I had reset the
minimum to 766 and max to 768. System is currently using
767 MB, which seems right. Sys Restore is max of drive
(12%). I'll reduce it to 500 MB, but how will that help
when I'm sometimes losing ALL "free" space?

Thanks again!

Give FolderSizes a look too - www.foldersizes.com - great way to see
where all the drive space went!
