Disappearing DVD and R/W Drives

My drives have been disappearing occasionally for several months.
Until today I could always locate them by running the Add Hardware
Wizard and double clicking Disc Detector. However I can't get to
either drive today and have a lot of CD's to burn ASAP.

I have never had a warning message related to this and have never
messed with my CD creator software.

I recently tried to make registry deletions recommended by others but
for some reason I able to make the deletions.

Thanks - Tom

i also have the sme problem although mine has only occured in the last 4
days, i have now lost both my cd-roms, they appear to power up when bios
starts up but then nothing when xp starts , but they are both spinning which
can be felt by touching the sides, they won't do anything and are not seen
by device manager.
Any help appreciated..

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website
