My son and I had tried to uninstall Kazaaa Media Desktop
and then our computer began to run very slow and the CD
drives disappeared. I had to remove the least traces of
Kazaa with the Kazaabegone program (Remove Programs still
leaves a lot of debris) but the drives were still missing.
The Problem turned out to be damged Registry Entries
caused by the (probably badly handled) uninstallation of
Kazaa.
I found the answer at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;314060&Product=winxp
Article NO: 314060 is about what can happen after an
uninstall of Easy Cd Creator, but uninstalling Kazaa had
the same effect.
After deleting the offending registry entries, I found I
had to re-install my copy of ECDC too(which I hadn't
uninstalled to begin with)...well actually I found that
there was an update available and that did the job
anyway) but it wasn't ECDC that caused the problem, it
was Kazaa.
Device manager was saying that the drivers were missing
or damaged but it was a damaged registry entry that
caused the drives to disappear. Be warned !
